Another mom and I presented the first Earth and the Environment unit - Weathering & Erosion this morning in our son's grade 5 classroom. What a mess, but fun!
The Puppet Show went great - lots of laughs especially when the front row got sprayed with water.
Then we split the class into two groups - indoor & outdoor activities, it was a beautiful fall morning to explore nature outside with the students.
In the classroom I set up the three indoor activities.
Splash - This activity was very messy! I don't know how to make this less messy: flour + water with children = a mess! All I can say is ... try to keep the activity (mess) on the table because picking wet flour out of the carpet is not fun.
Rock and Roll - We had the students make a prediction ... then each student shook the "shaken" jar for 20 seconds. The students were very happy to see that their predictions were correct after we drained the water threw the filters.
Swept Away - This was a favorite! The lids were not tight, but it was easy enough the clean up the corn meal that got blown onto the table.
Outside in the school yard, Slipping Soil was fun. It's always enjoyable to see a group of students working together on a project, especially when they are trying to beat the other three groups. I bought a large bag of soil at Ace for $4, enough for 8 bins (2 sets of 4 groups) - I thought that was easier then digging up my yard!
After the students completed the four activities, we all got back together to tie all the activities together with the Shaping the Land Slide Show. There were lots of questions and class discussions with each photograph, which was great ... grade 5 is interesting.
We were lucky enough to have almost 2 hours with the students, taking up the Science lesson for the day.
I really enjoyed my morning learning more about Weather & Erosion and I think the grade 5 students did as well!
Please let us know how your presentations went ...
